Recently I was a panelist at a public forum on gender identity; essentially “Trans People 101” for the residents of my small Southern city.
As I sat in front of a few hundred people explaining what it could mean to be non-binary, and answering questions about my own experience, I realized something – I never had the confidence to do something like that before I began transitioning.
Masculinity always felt like an oversized glove, awkward and isolating. Taking it off and discovering who I was underneath gave me a sense of agency over my life, and a sense of presence within the lives of others, that was missing prior. Honestly, I feel more like a real person now.
